Welcome Letter
Dear Friends,
We were proud of our work last season, which would not have been possible without your support. We are thrilled to welcome you to this diverse and exciting new season. It is our responsibility, mission, and commitment to everyone in our audience to bring you the best we can in music and storytelling. The operas we have chosen for this season come from some of the most inspiring composers and librettists of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, and the stories take us around the world.

Synopsis
Florestan, who opposes his country’s repressive new regime, is seized and imprisoned. After several months, Leonore, Florestan’s wife, learns the location of the secret detention facility in which political prisoners are being held. Disguising herself as a man, “Fidelio,” she obtains employment in the prison. Rocco, the warden, is impressed with the “young man,” as is Rocco’s daughter, Marzelline.
Meanwhile, the opposition party continues to gain strength. The Commander, suspecting a security flaw, informs Pizarro, his second-in-command, that he will conduct a thorough inspection of the detention facility. Pizarro resolves to dispose of Florestan before the Commander’s arrival.
Background
History is often told as the story of clashes between larger-than-life rulers and their villainous counterparts. Leonore, ou l’amour conjugal , the drama that served as the source for Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera, instead centers the heroism of an ordinary woman who disguises herself as a man in order to find and free her unjustly imprisoned husband. The author of the original libretto, Jean-Nicolas Bouilly (1763–1842), served in an official position at Tours and later claimed that the story was inspired by actual events during the Reign of Terror, in which he himself was the official who arrived at just the right moment.
Director's Note
I am thrilled to collaborate with our incoming Music Director, Robert Spano, on a new production of Fidelio . It is a work that makes such a strong statement on its own, so I did not want to overcomplicate it or lay a heavy concept on top of it. Instead, I wanted to create a spartan visual production that allows the work’s heroes—a couple of ordinary citizens who refuse to stay silent in the face of injustice—to shine. It is an opera that speaks to all epochs, and it happens to have a woman at the center of the drama. As one of the leading composers of the Enlightenment, Beethoven was swept up in the swirl of Europe’s new optimism that democracy could consolidate the principles of equal rights and opportunities.
Behind the Scenes
Unconventional Casting
Thoughts on the origins of trouser roles, gender-bending on the opera stage, and how they can broaden the range of operatic talent, from Fidelio ’s director and mezzo- soprano Denyce Graves , who plays the Prime Minister.
About Those “Trouser Roles”
Director Francesca Zambello recalls: “I will always remember sitting with a non-opera-going friend during a performance of Rosenkavalier (maybe not the best starter opera), and she asked me why the guy was a girl. In this case, she was referring to Susan Graham, singing Octavian, one of Susan’s much-lauded signature roles. During the first intermission, I tried to explain the reason for a “trouser role,” a male character who a female-identified singer conventionally sings. One of the many thrills of opera is how it thrives on exaggeration, bending conventional rules and assumptions and activating our imagination. In hardly any aspect of opera does this come out as much as in the trouser role, which encompasses a broad repertoire, in roles frequently but not exclusively written for the mezzo-soprano or soprano voice, and winds up somewhere on a gradient between mimicking “reality” and engaging in smirking double entendres.
Q&A
Music Director Designate Robert Spano
With this production of Fidelio, the WNO welcomes Robert Spano as Music Director Designate. A four-time Grammy Award® winner, Spano is one of today’s most eminent conductors, having led the world’s major orchestras and opera companies and spending two decades as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where he is now music director laureate. We caught up with him as he anticipated the start of his tenure in D.C.
What are you most excited about becoming the music director of WNO?
When I left the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where I was a music director for 20 years, one of the things I hoped for in my calendar was more opera. So for this to happen is a kind of miracle. Conductors get labeled symphonic conductor or opera conductor. But I’ve been very lucky in my life. I’ve always managed to keep operatic engagements as part of my calendar every season.
Preview: The Choices of Macbeth
By David Hsieh
As a young actress studying Shakespeare in London, Brenna Corner had to jump into a touring production of Macbeth when the originally booked Lady Macbeth suddenly became unavailable. “What I took away from those performances was the difference in perception,” she says now, years later, as an experienced opera and stage director. Because she was much younger than the indisposed actress, she could not really play the role as a female Machiavelli against her older leading man. Instead, she played her as an ambitious trophy wife intent on making the best out of the opportunity.
