Director's Note

A Note from Pathways to Performance Curator, Theresa Ruth Howard

“Oftentimes well framed questions are more impactful than declarative statements as they are invitations to begin a conversation rather than end one."

Launched just under two years ago, Pathways to Performance is MoBBallet’s initiative to cultivate and provide concrete opportunities for Black choreographers working in the ballet idiom. When Kennedy Center’s Director of Dance Programming Jane Raleigh extended the invitation to present our performance debut, the appellation of this program was a matter of great contemplation. We bandied about a number of possibilities. Pathways was too new to have earned name recognition, and we would be remiss if we did not capitalize on the success of the June 2022 Reframing the Narrative program. Curatorially, the Reframing residency, which brought together 11 Black-identifying dancers and choreographer Donald Byrd to create the bespoke work "From Other Suns," conceptually shares DNA with Pathways, however, it was important to me that the two have autonomous identities.

When Jane proposed “Pathways to Performance: Exercises in Reframing the Narrative,” it resonated. Invitations and exercises are my love language. Philosophically I see life as an exercise in finding the answers to questions. Some are deeply personal, others are about the human condition, navigating the world or creating change within it. I have always been what I call "infinitely interested" in everything and everyone. I love questions because they present an opportunity for discovery. I know that there is something to be learned from every person and every situation. Question marks are more effective and inclusive than periods. They are invitations to contemplate and contribute one’s voice into the space, while statements are simply to be taken in. They can be more impactful and effective than statements. In my work as an organizational consultant, diversity strategist, and executive coach, I have witnessed the transformative power of thoughtfully crafted questions.
