Sergei Prokofiev: Summer Night (Suite from Betrothal in a Monastery)
The work of 18th-century Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816) inspired two very different 20th-century composers—one in the United States, the other in the Soviet Union—within just a few years of each other. In 1931, a young Samuel Barber, a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, wrote a spirited overture to Sheridan’s School for Scandal. About a decade later, Sergei Prokofiev, wishing to take a break from the heavily political (and politicized) works he had been writing lately, turned to another classic comedy by Sheridan, The Duenna . With help from his partner and future second wife, poet and translator Mira Mendelson, Prokofiev turned the play into a comic opera, on which he worked while World War II was raging. Part of the compositional work was done in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where the composer and Mendelson had to evacuate after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. The opera was premiered in Leningrad in 1946, a year after the end of the war, under the title Obruchéniye v monastyré (“Betrothal in a Monastery”).
Alexander Raskatov: Time’s River : Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra
Alexander Raskatov was born in Moscow the same year Prokofiev died there. A resident of Western Europe (first Germany, then France) since the early 1990s, he is best known for his operas. His most recent stage work, based on George Orwell’s Animal Farm, was premiered to great acclaim at Amsterdam’s Dutch National Opera in 2023.
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 ("Pathétique") in B minor, Op. 74
On October 28, 1893, Tchaikovsky conducted the premiere of his Sixth Symphony in St. Petersburg. Nine days later, he was dead, a victim of the cholera epidemic that had broken out in the city. Although Tchaikovsky, at 53, was at the height of his creative powers and by all accounts in good health, he felt what his biographer David Brown described as a ‟deepening inner gloom.” It is probably the first major symphony to end with a tragic slow movement instead of a rousing fast finale.
