Giuseppe Verdi: OTELLO
If the army general Otello could only hear the orchestra playing alongside his life, he might be able to recognize the evil lurking just beyond the shining facade of his trusted ensign. This is the power of Giuseppe Verdi: The legendary Italian opera composer took the 19th century by storm with his bold musical characterizations of politically-charged plots—and his development of the orchestra into a sort of omniscient narrator, finally giving the ensemble an equal dramatic role as that occupied by singers. Verdi’s penultimate opera, Otello, singularly captures not only this rebalancing of action, but also the drastic musical, cultural, and political changes that swept through Italy during Verdi’s almost century-long life.
