Program Notes

Steve Holtzman, EXECUTIVE Producer

In the early autumn of 2022 Larry Klein shared an album with me he conceived, produced, and was about to release on Blue Note Records called Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen. I knew Larry and Leonard were close friends and that Larry had produced beautiful covers of Leonard's work so I excitedly hit the play button. I was not prepared. The album made me feel Leonard Cohen's lyrics in a way I never had before. Intimate, moving, a smile here then a tear. When the last note faded I sat in silence taking it all in. I wanted to find a way to help share this with the world. Larry and I approached the Kennedy Center about a live concert version of the album and Matthew Winer and Justin Ellis were more than open to the idea. They have been incredibly generous with their time, talent and knowledge. Their idea of adding the National Symphony Orchestra into the mix brought the concept to another level.

Larry Klein, Music Director

We all have friends or family who, when they pass, we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact we are going to miss them every day. Leonard Cohen is a friend who occupied this kind of space in my life. I came away from every conversation with him changed in some sense. Sometimes laughing, sometimes re-assessing a view on something, or sometimes just being reminded of how serious the business of writing and revision was. He always traveled with a little notebook and a pen, never wanting to let a good line slip by without being taken down or developed. When asked about writing he always said that he hated it. “It’s too hard” he would say. He was a merciless editor of his own work. After he passed, I found myself wanting to work with his songs on nearly every album that I worked on for a number of years. I decided to see if I could facilitate doing a whole album of his great songs; re-imagining them through a looking glass, and with an eclectic group of great voices that I loved. I approached Don Was and Blue Note about the idea, and thankfully he said yes.
