Meet the Artists
Program Notes
I want to thank PostClassical Ensemble for inviting me to curate this concert as part of a critically important conversation regarding diversity and inclusion. I am deeply honored. I hope what is done here will reverberate mightily and yield positive results.
As an African American composer, I take my position and responsibility seriously. When I teach, I encourage all of my students to speak with their own voice, and not succumb to the limitations others may try to give them. I believe that for too long, African-Americans (and many others) have been pigeon-holed (both by their own constituency and by others) by limited assumptions of the scope of their creative activity. I want to explode this. I believe that the artist must be a citizen aware of the context in which they live, both politically and culturally. Then they must define their own world with frames of reference unique to themself and invite people into that world at appropriate times.
PCE’s American Roots Artist Award
Since its inception in 2008, PCE’s American Roots series has been dedicated to exploring little-known and forgotten chapters in the history of American music, especially the contributions of African-American musicians and composers.
To recognize those who have made significant contributions to this genre, PostClassical Ensemble has created the American Roots Artist Award.
We are honored to present the 2024 American Roots Artist Award to Jeffrey Mumford for his extraordinary contributions to American orchestral and choral music.
