Radha’s friend finds Radha despondent and longing for Krishna.
She is inconsolable in her separation from her beloved,
the once comforting scent of sandalwood is now like poison,
the soft moonlight pierces her heart like cupid’s arrows
and the cool breeze off the Malaya mountains, burns like venom.
Radha’s friend entreats Krishna to take heed of Radha’s suffering,
She holds him close to her heart, shielding him from Madana’s flower-tipped arrows.
She is going mad in her desperation - crying out for him,
laughing, sobbing, seeing his image everywhere, yet nowhere.

Program Notes
A Letter From the Artistic Director
(Written for program as originally conceived with Ensemble Amedyez performing on the first half. Opera Lafayette is extremely grateful to Karim Sulayman and Sean Shibe for stepping in on short notice with music from their “Broken Branches” program.)
Dear Friends,
As we open Opera Lafayette’s 30 th Anniversary season, my last as Artistic Director, I’m very happy to be able to introduce a new program with old friends, one which speaks to the present moment while illuminating an historical past.
It's a pleasure and a privilege to bring back the prodigiously gifted soprano Amel Brahim-Djelloul, not only in the western music we have heard her sing, but in the traditional music of her native Algeria, and to honor the incredibly imaginative choreographer and Kalanidhi Dance founder Anuradha Nehru in a reprise of excerpts from our first collaboration (David’s Lalla Roukh), as well as in a work from her native India.
Western Composers and the Middle East
by Ralph P. Locke
Emeritus Professor of Musicology, Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester)
The traditional ways of making music in the Middle East are quite diverse, but they generally involve well-known tunes (freshly reinterpreted on each occasion) and/or entirely free improvisation on certain accepted scales and rhythmic figures. Western music, by contrast, has often placed the composer at the center of musical activity, and encouraged him or her to create “works.” These are notated by him or her and then performed in more or less the same way—though of course with some personal touches, and sometimes much more securely than others!—from one performance to the next.
What happens when Eastern (in the broadest sense) and Western traditions meet?
