On Mars (Music Accord Commission)

Three world-class musicians unite for an unforgettable evening! Jamie Barton, a mezzo-soprano “synonymous with excellence” (OperaWire), is critically acclaimed in concert, in recital, and on opera stages around the world. Violist Matthew Lipman brings his “musical sensitivity” (Chicago Tribune) and “rich tone and elegant phrasing” (The New York Times) as one of the leading players of his generation. Pianist Tamar Sanikidze, an “accompanist with wondrous tact and virtuosity” (San Francisco Chronicle), is a familiar face, having served as a coach with the Washington National Opera’s Cafritz Young Artist Program from 2007 to 2012.

The trio will perform a new Music Accord Commission by Joel Thompson entitled On Mars, winner of the 2018 American Prize for Choral Composition for Seven Last Words of the Unarmed.

Note from the Artist

Tamar Sanikidze

“Jamie and I first met in New York City during the early 2000s when we performed for Marilyn Horne’s Master Class at Carnegie Hall. The experience of performing Mahler for Miss Horne in Carnegie Hall left a lasting impression on us. Since then, we have remained friends and our paths have crossed many times as colleagues. Our recital will bring together this decades-old friendship and will also create a new one with the wonderful violist Matthew Lipman. Together, we will present masterpieces from the past and present, looking through exciting lenses into both the past and future.”
