About Alfred Street Baptist Church
Alfred Street Baptist Church traces its origins to 1803, during the time when Thomas Jefferson served as the third President of the United States. It has been at its present location since 1842 when members of the Colored Baptist Society purchased the site. Over the years, Alfred Street has been a leader among churches and has made significant contributions in education, missions, children’s ministries, and advancement of women. Since 1979, the church has licensed and ordained 12 female ministers. Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley serves as the church’s eighth pastor, He is regarded as one of the most prolific and prophetic voices of justice and grace in our generation. Currently, the church has nearly 12,000 members and 80 active ministries.
