Overview
“Where there is Love there is no fear” - Dr. Barbara Ann Teer
“We're gonna regain our strength and reclaim our power right now this hour!” - NBT Liberators
Chants. Rituals. Restoration. Liberation! These are the seminal ingredients of the work of National Black Theatre (NBT). A recipe forged by our ancestors, and fortified by the founding vision of Dr. Barbara Ann Teer and NBT’s original company of Liberators. Tonight in our nation's capital, in the historic Opera House at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, NBT is proud to produce this remounted work with our co-producer The Apollo. This seminal work originally premiered in the wake of the shutdown in 2022 at The Apollo alongside the American Composer’s Orchestra to a sold out house in Harlem. Now two years later we are able to re-share the magic, the ritual, the sound bath we produced under creative concept and direction of Jonathan McCrory, NBT Executive Artistic Director and see this work take NEW heights as we partner with èßäAVto expand the impact of this work.
Over the past few years, words can’t begin to capture the disquieting amount of times we have had to collectively navigate unthinkable loss, trauma, grief, and violence. This evening is a gift in response to our collective grief -–a balm to help transform our wounds into wisdom, a catalyst for our collective healing and restoration. Tonight is just one addition to the week-long programming we have curated for The Gathering: A Place For Narrative Change. Thanks to the leadership of Marc Bamuthi Joseph a partnership with the Social Impact Team at the Kennedy Center was forged as their Conflux partner. NBT, with this partnership, was able to dream into an expansive list of offerings that wrapped around this one night event and helped to address the narrative changed need to America, for Black folx and for this community… and tonight you are at the centerpiece, the sonic quest that birthed it all.
If this is your first time engaging with National Black Theatre , we invite you to learn more about our work as we embark on our 57th season; a season dedicated, as always, to the power of unapologetic Black storytelling. As we are embarking on building the theater of the future.
Tonight, let us be reminded that our grief is just a confirmation that love is present; that joy is always ours for the choosing, and that we gather in the name of all who came before us. Together, we breathe in the truth and exhale new pathways forward. Thank you for joining us for this ritual.
Always with love,
Sade Lythcott
