James A. Johnson Tribute Week: Aretha Franklin and the Clark Sisters

Today from our Millennium Stage archives: look back on Aretha Franklin's Let Freedom Ring! performance during our annual celebration of Martin Luther King with Georgetown University, plus the Clark Sisters' performance as part of a gospel series curated by Nolan Williams, Jr.

Presented as part of a weeklong celebration of the legacy of James A. Johnson, former Kennedy Center chairman who passed over the weekend. His leadership, generosity, and vision transformed the Kennedy Center with the creation of Millennium Stage, a daily, free performances series that celebrated artistic styles across genres, cultures, and communities making the institution wildly more accepting and representative of art and people in our society. He was also passionate about resourcing and supporting young artists.
