In this lecture and performance, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Studio Company and choreographer John Selya explore the history of classical dance, demonstrating how it has changed over 300 years, the five positions, warming up, shoes, costumes, national folk dances, and many others. The company performs excerpts from "Raymonda" (choreography by Marius Petipa, music by Alexander Glazunov), "Don Quixote" (choreography by Marius Petipa, music by Ludwig Minkus), "Diary" (choreography by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, music by Judith Lander), and "Carnival of the Animals" (choreography by John Selya, music by Camille Saint-Saëns), in addition to taking questions from the audience (recorded in 1997 at C. D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge, VA).
