Guantanamera: A Poem and a Song
How are two artists brought together by a Cuban folk song?

In this 9-12 lesson, students will research and analyze the famous Cuban folk song, “Guantanamera.” The song was made famous by Pete Seeger with lyrics from a poem by José Martí. They will draw comparisons between the artists and discover the revolutionary history shared by the two men.

 

 

Lesson Content

Learning Objectives 

Students will: 

  • Make comparisons between lyrics and a poem.  
  • Describe the meaning of the lyrics. 
  • Listen to and discuss the song, “Guantanamera.”
  • Compare the revolutionary activities of José Martí and Pete Seeger.
  • Write an informative text about José Martí and Pete Seeger.
