Philina Zhang

Philina Zhang began composing at the age of eight and studies at the Juilliard School Pre-College with Ira Taxin. Philina was recently named the winner of the 2023 MTNA New York State Composition Competition and recognized as an Honorable Mention in the 2023 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Awards. She was selected as a finalist at both the 2022 and 2023 National Young Composers Challenge, and has also been recognized at the Tribeca New Music Young Composer Competition. Philina started learning piano when she was three and studies with Irina Morozova at Special Music School at Kaufman Center. In July of 2023, she made her debut solo recital at La Seu Vella in Lleida, Spain after winning 1st prize at the 2022 Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition. Most recently, in June 2024, she performed Rachmaninov's first piano concerto with the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony conducted by David Bernard at Merkin Hall after winning the annual Special Music School Concerto Competition. She has played at National Bohemian Hall, Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, and the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in the USA in addition to venues across Germany, Austria, Italy, and China. She often performs in chamber duo with her violinist sister, Nickita Zhang.
