I hail from the Wild, Wild West, where I had trouble cutting on the dotted black line, so I read Steinbeck and became a modern dancer instead. A child of sweater vests and bowties, I have taught for more than half my life. I believe dance matters. And I’d like to persuade you likewise, and wordwise. I earned my BFA in Dance at SUNY Purchase, before moving to Berlin to found my first dance company. Ever since, I have created big movement for small spaces with a good view of a crescent moon. I’ve also led tours at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, cleaned house for a generously tipping stripper, performed foR&Baryshnikov with kale in my incisors, and danced on a Noah Baumbach film set. Since landing in the middle of the country’s worst traffic, I have lovingly driven to rehearsals for Stephanie Miracle, Tzveta Kassabova, Sharon Mansur, Robin Neveu Brown, Jessie Laurita-Spanglet, and Colette Krogol Matthew Reeves’ Orange Grove Dance. I am currently pursuing my MFA at UMD while serving as Associate Director of Greater Washington Dance Center. I live in Takoma Park with the love of my life, overflowing bookshelves, and a fireplace decorated with construction paper flames. sarahbethoppenheim.com
