SOCIAL IMPACT
Nikki Mirza (she/her/hers) is a South Asian American director, choreographer, and performer based in the DMV. She grew up performing in local theater and dance productions and was a Show Choir Kid (it’s both nothing and everything like Glee). Her senior year of college was her first directing opportunity: Spring Awakening. Her vision involved a lyrical dance ensemble embodying the subconscious poetic lyrics of the characters. This experience unlocked her joy for directing and choreographing. The power of movement as physical storytelling has since been core to her artistry. She is also a firm believer that all performers are dancers. The definition of dance is enormous and inclusive, contrary to what our industry and college arts programs preach. She prioritizes creating a joyful, healthy, collaborative environment where trust is built and people are heard, supported, and inspired. She takes this energy into each room she enters, whether as a performer, teaching artist, or creative team member.
Mizra is originally from Southern California, but has been living in the DMV for the last five years and continues to travel for various contracts. Some credits include: DMV area: Olney Theatre Center: Dance Nation (choreo./A.D.), Ink (Round House CoPro - choreo./A.D.); NextStop Theatre Company: Every Brilliant Thing (dir.), Matilda (choreo); 1st Stage: Secret Things (choreo./A.D.); Signature Theatre: Sweeney Todd (A.D.); Constellation Theatre Company: Desperate Measures (choreo.); Theater J: Tiny Lights (performer). Regional: La Jolla Playhouse: Abeba in the Tall Grass (dir.), Bhangin’ It (A.D./swing), Light Years Away (performer); Weathervane Playhouse: Kinky Boots (dir./choreo.), 9 to 5 (dir./choreo.); Creede Repertory Theatre: Cinderella (choreo.); Goodspeed Opera House: Christmas in Connecticut (A.D.).
