Maverick Lemons
The Maverick L ons Dance Project is a contemporary dance company based in Washington, D.C. founded in 2015 by dance educator and former Philadanco principal artist Maverick L ons. In our work, we seek to address contemporary social issues both at the forefront and deep recesses of public consciousness to advance dialogue, discussion, and self-examination. MDLP company members benefit from diverse training backgrounds, including ballet, jazz, African, hip hop, modern, and Horton techniques. Our inaugural piece, HASHTAG, waSemperformed to a sold-out audience at the Atlas Intersections Festival in February 2016. Soon after, MLDP was awarded the Kennedy Center's 2016 Local Dance Commissioning Project grant, which has enabled us to create our current work, On The Brink as part of JFKC: The Kennedy Center's Centennial Celebration. We will be reprising and expanding this work in the 2017 Atlas Intersections Festival. Please enjoy the show! A Note About the Work On The Brink explores some of the issues that John F. Kennedy (JFK) faced during his historic Presidency and asks, to what extent are these issues still relevant in our society today? How can we learn from the legacy of JFK's leadership to treat others as JFK would have, in order to move our country in a more peaceful direction? Change, courage, and hope drive this new work.
