Erin Dowrey is the Assistant Principal Percussionist of the National Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his appointment with the National Symphony Orchestra in 2023, he held the Section Percussion position with the San Diego Symphony for 9 years. He has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, West Virginia Symphony, and Erie Philharmonic orchestras. He attended the Tanglewood Music Festival in 2012 and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2013.
While in San Diego, Erin performed as a soloist with the San Diego Symphony, featured in Toru Takemitsu’s “From me flows what you call Time.” He also performed in numerous chamber projects with Art of Elan, including pieces by John Luther Adams, and Gabriela Frank. Erin’s other honors include 2nd Place and 3rd Place in the Atlanta Snare Drum Competition in 2010 and 2011 respectively, as well as 1st Prize Absolute in the Italy Percussion Competition (Snare Drum division group B) in 2011.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Erin began his music studies in percussion with Mark Hodges. He attended Carnegie Mellon University for his Bachelor of Music degree. While in Pittsburgh, Erin studied with Jeremy Branson, Paul Evans and Chris Allen. Erin attended Temple University for his Master of Music in Percussion, studying under Alan Abel and Chris Deviney.
