Xi Chen

Xi Chen comes from a family of musicians and music educators. At the age of eleven, she enrolled at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. She received her Master's Degree from Temple University. Her teachers were Helen Kwalwasser, William DePasquale, David Arben, Lin Yaoji and Zhao Weijian. Xi was the winner of Temple University’s Concerto Competition and Pi Kappa Lambda (ΠΚΛ) prize. She has performed in Asia, Europe and the Americas as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician, at venues such as Teatro Carlos Gomes and the Lincoln Center. She was the leader of Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra whose 1998 recording was a finalist for the Grammy awards. Xi is passionate about playing music composed by her colleagues. Her recitals have been live-broadcasted by WFLN and WETA.

Xi is a member of the Kennedy Center Opera House/Washington National Opera Orchestra. She is inspired by audiences and students she meets at her performances, through Kennedy Center's Education Outreach Program and at her studio. Some of her students have chosen to take up the music profession; others simply to keep making music whenever they are able, and Xi is pleased that music and creativity remain joyful elements of their lives.

Xi enjoys listening to music live and on vinyl records. When she’s not working, you can find her enjoying nature (hiking, rock climbing, foraging, gardening,) learning (yoga, medicine, writing, business, counseling) and spending time with her family (including her dog, of course). She is a director of NySaves.
