Children’s Legacy Theatre
Since 2016, Children’s Legacy Theatre (CLT) has been the place for Wards 7 and 8 teens to create and live! Jackie Carter, CLT, Founder and Executive Director set about the business of creating a pipeline through which the next generation of theater artists can hone their theater skills and test their theatrical metal. Our mission is to educate at-risk teens through the arts. Therefore, CLT offers hands-on experience in playwriting, directing, set-design, script writing, prop making, sound and light design, acting, choreography, costume design, stage management, theater administration, marketing, and public relations. However, the deeper work embedded in our teen participants are challenges and tasks that prepare our teens to execute every single aspect of CLT’s theater productions. Therefore, all productions are 100% managed by our trained teens. Eighty-five percent of the plays produced by CLT are written by its teen participants.
CLT uses the training model T.R.A.P.L. (teamwork, response to supervision, appearance, punctuality and leadership) to address three key issues: a) upskilling teens to confidently contribute to the workforce b) broadening their exposure to opportunities they would otherwise never even know about or hear of in their community, and c) influencing their sense of community and behavior as active and positive participants in projects and art forms that touch people’s lives in significant ways. In this way, CLT positively impacts and transforms the lives of our future leaders. Our vision and mission are to create extraordinary theater experiences that educate and challenge young people and their communities; to inspire teens to explore, think, and connect to other people, cultures and ideas; to bring classical and historical plays to life in ways that encourage teens to dream about who they are and who they may become; to produce kinder and positive contributors to our society.
